Example of getting to the point, and not

Same subject matter; different posters.

The first poster has been up in Lyall Bay, Wellington, for months now. It was made when there was a sewage problem but not a sewage disaster.

The point is hidden, especially from someone walking past and only glancing at the poster.

We don't see "avoid swimming" until we get to the bullet point.

Too many cooks in the kitchen?

Was the point hidden because they had time to:

  • craft the messages 

  • find a pretty picture 

  • run it up the sign-off chain 

  • let everyone add their phrase or two to make sure it 'sounded right'? 

(I think so.)

Then the the problem turned into a disaster

Within days of the disaster, the notice below went up. It gets to the point. 

This poster uses:

  • an icon rather than the perfect picture – quicker to source 

  • one colour – quicker to design

  • a smaller poster size – cheaper to produce a lot of them

  • a very short, pointed message – quicker to read.

And it works.
