Use words that you understand

Tip: use words that you understand

I just got a lovely note.

'I found the session really inciteful and engaging, which was fun to participate in. I'll definitely be taking a lot of it away with me and putting it all into practice.'

Thanks friend!

Inciteful or full of insight?

I checked 'inciteful' in the dictionary and it means 'When someone says or does something that makes other people want to do something bad'.

The Collins Dictionary example is ‘Do not be jealous, inciteful, enraged; murders are born from all of these.’

Hmmm. I think my person meant ‘full of insight’.

Use words you understand!

This is a plug for using common words. You’re more likely to be understood.

People like me might see a new word as an opportunity to dust off the dictionary, but we’re a niche audience. Don’t rely on us! When people are in work mode, they prefer simple words!

To be read, use common words

A study of over 4,000 Facebook posts found that posts got 16,000 more likes if they used a 4th-grade reading level rather than 5th grade. (Source: Writing for Busy Readers, Rogers and Lasky-Fink, p 74)

If your goal is to be read, use common words.
